Connecting Communities Through Stitch

About Stitch
As the famous anonymous quote goes: "When life gives you scraps – make a quilt" or in this case an 18 paneled embroidered artwork!
Become involved in the first project of its type in New Zealand and help stitch the first community art piece that pictorially combines a diverse range of cultural imagery. This is a social event – aimed at connecting people together, forming friendships and of course creating a beautiful artwork. Once completed the panels will be framed by tuku tuka Maori weaving and exhibited in Auckland with the possibility of national and international exhibitions!
What Stitch Involves
Currently Raeburn House is after photos, stories, images, colours, symbols, etc. that you feel represent your country. These are then going to be combined and translated into the different hand drawn panels by a local artist, Ian Moore. Then the stitching begins! Working together, you will help embroider over what the artist has drawn, but do not worry … no stitching experience required, no materials to bring, just yourself!
When Stitch Starts
Now! Please call, email or send your stories and images to Raeburn House as soon as possible. The stitching will begin 8 February, 2010 at the Norman King Building in Northcote from 11:00am to 4:00pm (weekly, every Monday). Stitch will run for approximately for one year to 18 months.
Get Involved With Stitch
Raeburn House welcomes calls, emails and enquires from maori, pacific peoples, kiwi, migrants, disability and mental health groups – if fact all the community! This is about connecting people and creating something beautiful along the way.
