Women Encouraged to Start the Year with a Free Mammogram

Women in North Shore, Waitakere and Rodney are being encouraged to start the year with a free mammogram.
BreastScreen Waitemata is part of the national BreastScreen Aotearoa programme that checks women for early breast cancer. Women, aged 45 to 69 years, who have never had a mammogram before, or who have not had one for more than two years, are being encouraged to take advantage of the free breast screening appointments.

Free Home Insulation Programme for Eligible Families

Waitemata District Health Board is offering a free home insulation programme to Community Services Card holders living in the Waitakere, North Shore, or Rodney districts (applicants must live in homes built before January 2000). Stitch News Flash

Raffle tickets for the first hand embroidered quilt of Hands of Friendship around the World are on sale now for only $2 per ticket. Tickets will be available until the 25 April. The raffle will be drawn under police supervision and results will be published in the NZ Herald on the 30 April 2012.

Strengthening Families - A Service of Raeburn House

Did you know that you can get support for your family/whanau at Raeburn House? Strengthening Families is here to help your family/whānau before any problems get too big
Strengthening Families might be right if you are facing challenges like:

  • finding a warm, comfortable home for your family/ whānau
  • getting help with your child or young person’s health or behaviour
  • money troubles
  • doing something about your child not doing well at school
  • coping with stress at home.
  • family relationships
  • family violence
  • addiction

Strengthening Families is there to help your family/ whānau before any problems get too big. Families often get help with several of these things.
Families of all shapes and sizes use Strengthening Families.  This service is free and 100% voluntary.

Facilitation Skills For Community Workers
The ability to work with diverse groups and facilitate community conversations is an essential skill for community workers. You are invited to three sessions focussed on building essential skills for facilitating groups and meetings more effectively. This workshop series will be hosted by Morna Haist, an experienced facilitator and public speaker with broad experience in working with diverse groups.
When: Wednesdays, 8 & 15 Feb and 7 March, 10:00am – 1:00pm

Self-Esteem & Confidence
This personal development group explores assertiveness, communication and relationships, and focuses on building self-belief and self-esteem.
When: Sundays, 4 weeks, starts 5 February, 1:00pm – 4:00pm

Words of Wisdom
A unique inspirational writing course designed to promote interaction and sharing. A celebration of the experiences of life and the wisdom gained on your journey.
When: Thursdays, 8 weeks, starts 9 February, 1;00pm – 3:00pm
Facilitator: Maureen Wesley
Total Cost: $50

Meditation
Meditation is a technique to still the mind, reduce stress and anxiety, and provide clarity. Experienced facilitators will teach practical exercises for everyday use. Suitable for beginners as well as experienced meditators.
When: Wednesdays, 6 weeks, starts 15 February, 7:00pm – 8:00pm
Facilitators: Ojasvin Davis & Iris Haeusermann
Total Costs: $30 (or $6 per session)

Moving Past Depression
Do you want to move forward with your life? As well as exploring the depression cycle, this support group will also look at the causes of depression and provide tools and skills that can lead to resiliency and positive change.
When: Mondays, 6 weeks, starts 20 February, 7:00pm – 9:00pm
Facilitator: Tatjana Karaman
Total Costs: $60

Settlement Support North Shore - A Service of Raeburn House

Settling in a new country is not always easy. Settlement Support North Shore is a service of Raeburn House that helps newcomers find the information and services they need.
Our friendly advisors offer migrants and refugees:

  • Information about living in New Zealand
  • Referrals to local services
  • Orientation workshops (the NZ tax, education, and health systems explained)
  • A clear point of contact for support and advice

New Kiwi Career Success: Finding a job in New Zealand
The Auckland Chamber of Commerce is running a free 3-day course for migrant job seekers.  Topics covered include: practical job search advice, creating a Kiwi-style CV, answering tricky interview questions, researching industries and occupations, and developing an individualised job search strategy. 95 % of previous attendees had an interview within 3 months and 89 % were employed!
Participants must have Permanent Residency or a Work Permit

Funding Directory 2012 now Available!
The Funding Directory Auckland Region is produced annually by North Shore Community & Social Services and makes identifying funding sources an easy process. The Directory includes excellent information on preparing successful applications for funding, where to get other advice and support from, and a list of all funders in your district.
There is an A-Z list of nearly 100 other regional or national funders who support not-for-profit organisations. All sites of gaming machines are listed with contact details of Gaming Trusts in each area. Funding sources for Community, Health, Social Services, Education, Sport, Arts, Schools, etc

Changemakers Auckland Convention
Inspiring, entertaining and thought provoking presentations from leading changemakers from around New Zealand. As well as great talks, films, live performances and intergenerational presentations, there will be plenty of networking time to meet new people as well as catch up with old friends. So get a crew together, take a day out from work or study and come and get inspired about the positive change projects happening all around this beautiful country.

Muriwai Waitangi Day Festival 2012
The first Waitangi Day Muriwai festival is an event for the whole family and will include great music, kai, and art. Over 15 painters, photographers, sculptures and jewellers from the Muriwai area will be creating new works for sale. Musicians include Anika Moa, Moana & the Tribe, Pacific Curls, Nat Rose, and more.

A strict zero waste, alcohol and smoke free policy will be place, with all proceeds going to the Muriwai Lifesaving Club & Community Centre.

Roses Family Fun Run (Walk, Crawl)
The Helensville Lions Club in conjunction with Te Tangi Ora, Kaipara Collective is hosting a Family Fun Run from Springs Road, Parakai to Mill Roadd, Helensville.
The distance is 4.2km and there will be spot prizes on the day and certificates for those that complete the course.
Other happenings on the day include a Community Market, Waka regatta, kids entertainment and live music.
Bring yourself, family, friends, or a team – prizes for the best-dressed team!

This short course is designed to help you understand the health and disability system – what services are available and how they can be accessed. Volunteers Needed for Amitabha Hospice Service
This free caregiver/volunteer training course takes place in Avondale and will start on Wednesday 7 March from 6.30 to 9.00pm for eight consecutive Wednesdays, finishing Wednesday 25 April. Amitabha Hospice Service offers free practical home help and compassionate companionship for the elderly and the incurably ill of any age throughout the greater Auckland area.
